The project AGRO2CIRCULAR aims to implement a circular economy system for the recycling of the most relevant waste from the agri-food sector (fruit and vegetables and plastic multi-layers) into high added value products, driven by digital tools and built on a systemic approach with high replicable and scalable potential.

The project will address a number of industrial, economic and social challenges in the agri-food sector:

Harnessing fruit and vegetable by-products, which currently account for more than 40% of the food supply chain, by valorising their excellent bioactive compounds for the production of nutraceuticals, functional foods and cosmetics.
Use the unique properties of multilayer plastic coatings as industrial packaging for food and crop protection to protect food and crops in agriculture by developing the first value recycling chain for post-industrial multilayer coatings based on a synergistic approach.
Implement a digitalisation system in the agri-food sector by implementing a Data Integration System (DIS) as a digital tool to ensure traceability in the agri-food sector.

A2C will implement a demonstrator in the region of Murcia that is replicable in different parts of Europe for a territorial deployment of circular economy.

Objectives of DMC Research in the project

DMC Research Center SL will make available to the consortium its extensive experience in the implementation of extraction methods for natural products and in the development of value-added products for the agri-food field, in circular economy projects and in the sector nutraceutical.

The DMC leads Work Package 4 and has as its main role:

Collaborate in the definition of new formulations in the food and nutraceutical sector.
Develop a hybrid enzymatic hydrolysis and microwave-assisted extraction clean solvent route
Purify and stabilise extracts and evaluate them.
To develop innovative small-scale functional food and nutraceutical formulations and implement a microwave extraction pilot plant.
Validate bioactive extracts under real conditions.
Participate in the coordination and dissemination of results.

Project structure and leaders

The project is structured in 10 Work Packages and involves 41 partners from all over Europe.

The project is coordinated by the Footwear and Plastics Technology Centre of the Murcia region (CETEC).

The structure of the project is divided into 10 Work Packages led by different public bodies, innovation centres and companies:

WP1 A2C Specifications, Residues Management and Data Integration System. Lead: ECOTRACE
WP2 A2C technologies for the recycling of the organic agrifood wastes. Lidera: CTNC
WP3 A2C technologies for the sorting and recycling of multilayer plastics residues. Lead: GWC
WP4 Upcycling of recycled agrifood materials and upscaling. Lead: DMC
WP5 A2C technologies for the upcycling of the recycled plastics materials. Lead: UNIMIB
WP6 Demonstration of the A2C technological solution. Lead: GWC
WP7 A2C systemic solution adoption, replication and scalability. Lead: KVELOCE
WP8 A2C outreach: Communication, dissemination, exploitation, training & policy recommendations. Lead: ICONS
WP9 Project management and coordination activities. Leads: CETEC
WP10 Ethics requirements. Lead: CETEC

Green Deal: The European Green Pact

The project is part of the European Green Deal call.

It is a series of policy initiatives that aim to put the EU on the path towards a ecological transition, with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

It is the basis for the transformation of the EU into an equitable and prosperous society with an modern and competitive economy.

The package includes initiatives covering climate, environment, energy, transport, industry, agriculture and sustainable finance, all of which are closely linked.

The Commission launched the European Green Pact in December 2019 and the European Council took note of the Pact at its December meeting.

Agro2circular has received funding through the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme under agreement no. 101036838.
