The Research Group of Toxicology of the University of Seville, led by Dr. Ana María Cameán, is working on the safety assessment of sulphur compounds as potential additives in animal nutrition.
This is a competitive R&D&I animal nutrition project, awarded in the 2018 call of the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Andalusian Regional Government, with Dr. Silvia Pichardo acting as PI2, in collaboration with the productive fabric, together with the technology-based company DOMCA, based in Granada.
In this context, organosulphur derivatives from plants of the genus Allium extracts have demonstrated high technological and functional activity and although they are presumptively safe given their traditional use in feed, their safety for use in animal nutrition needs to be assessed.
«So far, we have conducted the toxicokinetic study of organosulphurates and their metabolites, starting with the biotransformation study. in vitro which allow us to draw a possible metabolic pathway in which we highlight oxidation and conjugation with glutathione as the main biotransformation pathways. The results will be confirmed by toxicokinetic assays. in vivo (OECD 417),» explained researcher Ana María Cameán.
These studies are complemented by toxicological tests in vivo following international experimental protocols (guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
A multigenerational study is currently underway to assess reproductive safety, and the results indicate no alterations in 1st generation CD1 mice orally exposed to the compounds of interest (OECD 416). All information generated so far points to a safe toxicological profile for these substances.
