The AQUAGARLIC project «Development of a product for aquaculture feed based on additives with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory action» has been selected in phase 1 of the H2020 SME Instrument programme.
The project aims to bring more environmentally friendly alternatives to the billion euro fish feed market.
AQUAGARLIC is a new feed additive developed by the Spanish company DOMCA that can prevent microbial diseases and reduce the incidence of parasites in farmed fish.
The additive is based on organosulphur compounds extracted from the plant species «Allium», which is found in foods such as onions and garlic, of which Spain is the largest producer in Europe. Crops that are considered unfit for human consumption are often sold as animal feed and AQUAGARLIC offers the potential to convert them into a supplement with high nutritional value in a circular economy strategy.
The first phase of the SME Instrument, called the “Concept and assessment of feasibility”The EU provides for a maximum of €50,000 in grants and business coaching. The EU establishes a maximum of 50,000 euros in grants and business coaching.
DOMCA is currently preparing the application for a phase II project (called EIC Accelerator) to bring the product to market in the EU.
