Biopromedfood is a European project of the PRIMA initiative that aims to research new bioprotective cultures (ferments) and bioactive extracts to improve food safety and extend the shelf life of perishable foods from the Mediterranean diet.

The BioProMedFood proposal focuses on research into two innovative and sustainable concepts: on the one hand it investigates bioactive components obtained from algae extracts and on the other hand bioprotective cultures obtained from traditional fermented meat products.

In both cases, the aim is to increase the efficiency of the food chain, to extend the shelf life of perishable Mediterranean foods and to improve food safety.

In addition, the project also aims to give an economic value to processed food by-products by contributing to the reduction of food waste and using them as a resource of bioactive components with the capacity to improve the qualitative parameters of Mediterranean foods.

The development of the project has allowed the reduction of invasive physical treatments and synthetic preservatives, the exploitation of Mediterranean microbial biodiversity and its by-products from the agri-food system.

Innovative sustainable solutions have been implemented and biotechnological tools optimised, capable of increasing the safety of traditional small-scale production.

In addition, we have sought to satisfy consumer demand for fresh and minimally processed food by ensuring the strictest safety parameters.

A consortium of partners from Mediterranean countries

PRIMA is a specific call for collaborative projects in the agri-food field involving companies and research centres from Mediterranean countries.

Biopromedfood includes a total of 10 partners from 5 Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Italy, Croatia, Spain and Slovenia).

The project is led by the Faculty of Seafood Processing Technologies of Çukurova University in Adana, Turkey.

The consortium also includes agri-food companies such as Centaurus and Clai, which supply the fish and meat industry products to be tested in the project, as well as DOMCA, which is in charge of evaluating the effectiveness of the project's bioprotective cultures and bioactive extracts.

The European PRIMA initiative

The European initiative PRIMA (Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area) aims to implement R&D&I actions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of agri-food systems and the quality, availability and management of water in the Mediterranean area.

It is a 10-year initiative (2018-2028), partially funded by the Horizon 2020 programme.

Currently, 19 countries are participating: Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.

A CDTI-funded project

The project is being promoted in Spain through the Industrial Technical Development Centre with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The project has a timeframe from 2020 to 2023 and DOMCA has a budget of 199,942.00 € of which a total of 169,942.90 € corresponds to the partially reimbursable aid.
