The project proposes to carry out the transformation of coconut oil by means of enzymatic extraction processes with the aim of obtaining a new lipid fraction with improved antimicrobial properties, which can be used as an antimicrobial component in a wide range of products. COCOBASE is a project in collaboration with the Andalusian technology centre TECNOVA.

The coconut oil is one of the main oils providing medium chain saturated fatty acids. There is a wealth of literature evidence pointing to the antibacterial capacity of coconut oil.

This activity is enhanced and amplified against a larger number of micro-organisms when the oil is subjected to enzymatic processes.

The enzymatic processes result in the hydrolysis of the oils, allowing fatty acids and glycerol to be obtained separately, giving rise to two products that are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

There is a wide variety of uses for the coconut oil which have made it one of the most widely used oils in the world. Among the most important and recent uses of interest for the different industries are those associated with its potential antibacterial. This potential makes this oil an economic ally and suitable for industrialisation, due to its characteristics and composition, to be used in a multitude of products such as formulations for use in oral hygiene or formulations to extend the shelf life of agri-food products.

Due to all the above information, the development of safe methods to enhance the antibacterial attributes of coconut oil based on enzymatic processes can be of great relevance and provide a product with great potential to be used for various purposes by different industries.

Objectives of the COCOBASE project

The COCOBASE project proposes to carry out the transformation of the coconut oil by means of enzymatic processes to improve its antibacterial qualities and to obtain a formulation suitable for incorporation as an antibacterial compound in products of various kinds.

Furthermore, different chromatographic techniques will be applied for the detection and separation of the different lipid fractions (gas, liquid, thin layer and column chromatography), as well as antibacterial evaluation techniques. in vitro.

A pre-evaluation will be carried out with the fractions obtained, and a post-evaluation will be carried out as a method of validation of the final products.

During the course of the project, the following objectives will be pursued:

Obtaining a lipid fraction with improved antimicrobial activity by enzymatic biotransformation and chromatographic processes, toxicologically safe.
Scale-up of the procedure for obtaining the enzymatically enhanced coconut lipid fraction on a pilot scale.
Incorporate this lipid fraction with improved antimicrobial activity into different formulations for application in products for various purposes (human food, food, animal feed, etc.). animal, (e.g. plant production and others).
Determination of the safety of formulated products.
Development of two new value-added products. On the one hand, a new type of food preservative of natural origin with antimicrobial capacity made from coconut oil will be produced. On the other hand, it opens the possibility to start manufacturing a new line of products for cosmetic and/or pharmaceutical use. Production methodologies will be validated for at least two products with great potential to be introduced respectively in the pharmaceutical and/or cosmetic industry (personal hygiene products) and food industry (food preservation) markets.

The project will run from December 2019 to November 2022 and is financed by CDTI with a budget of 206,015.00€ and a partially reimbursable grant of 175,112.75€ through the EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND (Feder: A way of doing Europe).
