In a world threatened by climate change, the growing population poses a challenge in combining food and sustainability. Cultured meat is therefore positioned as one of the greatest innovations of our century, integrating food safety, animal welfare and sustainability into a unique product that is ideal for the whole family. Cultured meat or laboratory meat is meat that comes from the cultivation of animal muscle cells previously extracted by biopsy and avoids animal slaughter.

Currently, there are very few entities worldwide that are producing cultured meat. Project objectives

The general objective of the CULTUREDMEAT project is to research cultured meat produced from cellular agriculture that, together with the development of healthy fats and functional ingredients, will allow the production of meat products for the prevention of dyslipidaemia (cholesterol) and colon cancer.

On the part of DMC Research, our objectives have consisted of:

To evaluate the sustainable sourcing and functionality of naturally occurring ingredients (viable or inactivated probiotics and phytocompounds) in various study models. in vitro e in vivo.
Investigate technologies for the protection and encapsulation of probiotics and plant compounds to ensure their viability and controlled release into the colon as a site of action.
Investigate formulations of ingredients of natural origin that can be integrated into the cultured meat produced. in vitro, as well as assessing the functionality of the new meat product as a whole (assessment of interactions and synergies between functional ingredients).
To achieve sustainable sourcing of active ingredients with health-promoting properties in response to the real market need for new ingredients with proven functionality.

Project partners

Culturedmeat has been born thanks to the cooperation of biotechnology companies specialised in nutrition and production technologies at national level, such as Argal (project leader), Biotech Foods, Martínez Somalo, DMC Research, BDI Biotech, Neoalgae, BTSA and Agrowingdata.

The consortium also has the collaboration of 10 research organisations (CTIC CITA, University of Oviedo, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid - FUAM, TECNALIA, Parc Científic de Barcelona, University of Seville - FIUS, VICOMTECH, University of Granada, Biodonostia and CIC BIOMAGUNE) to carry out the development of the idea.

On the other hand, ZABALA Innovation leads the coordination of the project thanks to its extensive experience in R&D grants.

Timeframe and funding

The Culturedmeat project (Exp: MIG-20201012) has been financed by the CDTI - Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology - through its call “Science and Innovation Missions 2019”, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund - ERDF - through its Pluri-regional Operational Programme for Spain 2014-2020 and has a total budget of 5,205,858.00 € and a grant of 3,707,288.59 €.

The project implementation period has been from December 2020 to June 2024.
