The circular economy has become a key pillar for a sustainable future, as it makes it possible to take advantage of waste and by-products from different sectors and reduce environmental impact. In the agri-food industry, this philosophy is particularly relevant as it transforms waste into value-added products. Projects such as Agro2Circular work precisely for this purpose: giving waste a second life.
In this context, the DMC Research Centre (part of the DOMCA Group) has positioned itself as a benchmark in innovation with the inauguration of its microwave extraction pilot plant in Alhendín (Granada). This technology opens up new opportunities for the reuse and recovery of waste, promoting a more sustainable and efficient production model.
Agro2Circular is a far-reaching European project that seeks to transform the agri-food sector through a sustainable system for the management and valorisation of key waste, such as fruit, vegetables and plastics. Involving 41 partners from across Europe, the initiative aims to turn waste into high-value products through advanced technologies and digital tools that optimise each stage of the process.
José Manuel García Madero, responsible for R&D Project Management of DMC, explains: “This strategy will not only help to reduce waste, but will also contribute to boosting the circular economy, making better use of resources. With Agro2Circular, we want to be a benchmark for sustainability in the European agri-food sector.”. His words reflect the project's commitment to a future where waste generates wealth, caring for the environment and bringing social benefits in line with the European Green Pact.

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is a modern extraction technique used in green chemistry for the recovery of bioactive compounds from natural sources. Unlike traditional methods, which often require long hours of processing and the use of large volumes of polluting solvents, the use of microwaves allows the desired compounds to be obtained in an efficient and clean manner.
Dr. José Manuel de la Torre, one of the project managers adds: “.“This technology is gaining ground in the industry due to its many advantages, as it makes it possible to obtain purer extracts in a much more environmentally friendly way.. This is crucial in a context where the demand for natural and sustainable products continues to grow..” The technology stands out for its speed and lower use of solvents, thus contributing to the circular economy and enabling high quality products to be obtained. Moreover, its potential extends to other sectors such as biotechnology and biomedicine, opening doors to new research and future collaborations.

This week, the new equipment was presented at a conference for members of the consortium, professionals from the sector and specialised researchers. The event was attended by representatives of agri-food cooperatives and prestigious institutions such as the CSIC, hospitals, universities and research foundations. Francis Guerrero, president of the Diputación de Granada and mayor of Alhendín, together with other members of the municipal corporation, were among the attendees. The guests had the opportunity to see how the equipment works by means of a demonstration and to explore its potential.
