The final day of the Andalusian Task Force was held on Thursday 26 June. Looking4Pro on the premises of Aurora Intelligent Nutrition, located in the town of Estepa, Seville. This event marked the closing of an ambitious collaborative innovation project focusing on the development of new sustainable food solutions based on alternative proteins.

During the conference, the main results of the project were presented. Looking4Pro, The aim of the project has been to researching and validating new sources of protein of non-conventional origin -like microalgae, insects and microbial proteins- for application in food, feed and functional ingredients. This approach responds to the current challenges of sustainability, food security and diversification of the agri-food chain, contributing directly to the transition towards a more sustainable and sustainable food supply. circular and low-carbon bioeconomy.

The day also served as a space for reflection on the strategic role of alternative proteins in food security of the future. The representatives of the participating institutions agreed that initiatives such as the Looking4Pro demonstrate the need to promote collaborative models that combine scientific knowledge, business innovation and social commitment to tackle the major challenges facing the agri-food sector.

The event ended with a guided tour of the facilities at Aurora Intelligent Nutrition, where attendees were able to see first-hand some of the prototypes developed during the project, as well as the associated production and quality control processes.

The Task Force Looking4Pro represents an important step towards the real and effective incorporation of the sustainable protein alternatives in the Andalusian agri-food value chain. The collaboration between technology centres, innovative companies and sectoral promotion bodies has made it possible to generate useful knowledge, viable products and lasting synergies that can be extended in future lines of research and development.

A commitment to collaborative innovation

The Task Force Looking4Pro has been a clear example of collaborative innovation, where different Andalusian entities have joined forces and knowledge to advance in the development of new alternative, sustainable and functional protein sources.

Biorizon Biotech, a biotech company from Almeria specialising in microalgae, carried out the selection of strains of interest for their high protein content. It also developed and optimised cultures to maximise protein content, producing biomass at both pilot and semi-industrial scale. It also worked on biomass pre-treatment processes, facilitating its subsequent valorisation.
Tecnova Technology Centre, located in Almeria, applied his experience in the validation of new ingredients and formulations, especially through its strategic line on edible insects, active since 2018. It was involved in insect breeding and the optimisation of their production as a source of high quality proteins. It also developed laboratory tests for the fractionation and purification of extracted proteins, assessing their palatability, stability and production performance in functional food and feed.
LANDALUZ - Andalusian Agri-Food Cluster acted as a strategic partner for the communication and transfer of results. Through its network of agri-food companies, it facilitated the connection between project developments and real market demands, fostering social and commercial acceptance of the new alternative proteins.
Aurora Intelligent Nutrition, The task force leader, who provided expertise in formulation and development of innovative food products. The company designed and developed new food matrices based on non-conventional proteins, carrying out physicochemical and sensory studies on the prototypes obtained. Thanks to this participation, the entity advanced in its capacity to offer tailor-made solutions aligned with current trends in conscious and sustainable consumption.
DOMCA, The Commission, on the other hand, focused its work on the development of microbial proteins as a sustainable alternative to animal proteins and a functional complement to plant matrices. It selected yeast and bacteria strains with high protein content and optimised their cultivation to maximise their performance. This line allowed the exploration of ingredients with high nutritional value, applicable to vegetarian and vegan diets, within an approach of circular economy and environmental sustainability.

Outstanding results

During the event, some of the most relevant achievements during the implementation of the project were presented.

Work was carried out with different sources of emerging protein, such as microalgae, yeasts and bacteria selected, as well as edible insects (Tenebrio molitor). Biomass production, cultivation and harvesting processes were carried out at both pilot and semi-industrial scale, as well as pre-treatment and stabilisation studies, prioritising techniques that would preserve protein content and functional compounds as much as possible, such as freeze-drying.

The analyses carried out confirmed the high protein content of the selected raw materials, with concentrations exceeding 70% in some cases after enrichment processes. In addition, parameters such as amino acid profile, digestibility, palatability and organoleptic properties, key aspects for their application in human food, were evaluated.

One of the main achievements of the project was the elaboration of several functional food prototypes enriched in alternative protein. Protein bars were formulated with different combinations of ingredients, reaching contents of up to 10% of protein. These formulations showed good stability, sensory acceptability and potential for industrial scale-up.

In addition, the following were carried out techno-economic analyses and industrial viability, The results of the study were used to identify recovery routes with a high potential for transfer to the market. It was validated that the use of these protein sources reduces the environmental impact compared to conventional proteins, in line with the principles of bioeconomy and sustainability.

Overall, Looking4Pro has laid the foundations for the development of new food solutions based on alternative proteins that are healthier, more sustainable and adapted to current consumer trends.
