DOMCA participated this week in the first seminar on trends in plastic applications with antimicrobials, held on 12 and 13 June at the plastics technology centre. AIMPLAS. This event brought together experts to discuss innovations in plastics with antimicrobial properties, essential for agriculture.

AMPLAST: 1st congress on antimicrobials in plastics

The seminar focused on biocontrol, a promising alternative for the treatment of plant diseases. Biocontrol offers innovative solutions based on substances of botanical origin, such as natural extracts, and biological control agents of microbial origin. These solutions are designed to protect crops against fungal and bacterial diseases, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

The sessions were organised in four blocks:

Biocontrol - Regulatory framework
Mechanisms of action - Precision organic farming
Lines of Research - Solutions to fungal and bacterial diseases
Market Registration - Success stories

Representing DOMCA, Ana Falcón Piñeiro, researcher at the department of agriculture presented the paper “Solutions for the control of microbial diseases in agriculture”, highlighting the progress of the European project BIOVEXO.

Networking Opportunities and Featured Participants

The seminar also featured a netoworking day to enable participants from different sectors to exchange ideas and establish collaborations. Among the keynote speakers were:

Chelo Escrig (AIMPLAS), who spoke about plasticulture as a tool for biocontrol.
Juan José Serra (SYNTECHRESEARCH - GABCONSULTING), who discussed biocontrol strategies and the use of polymers.
Belén Franch (University of Valencia), who presented on remote sensing in agriculture.
Marisa Domingo-Calap (EVOLVING THERAPEUTICS), who explored new biocontrol strategies in agri-food.
Antonio Vicent (IVIA), who addressed the protection of crops against microbial diseases.
Emmanuel Poirot (UPL) and Francisco Marín (Koppert Spain), who discussed challenges and opportunities for sustainable food systems and soil health.

The event concluded with a tour of the technology centre's facilities. AIMPLAS.

European project BIOVEXO

Within the framework of the European project BIOVEXO, DOMCA is working on the development of biopesticides that are aligned with organic farming. These biopesticides are designed to combat the pathogen and its vector, implementing an integrated pest management strategy. This project represents a significant advance in crop protection with sustainable methods.

BIOVEXO is an Innovation Action (IA) of the BBI (Bio-Based Industries) call of Horizon 2020 and has a budget of 8,025,112.41 € of which 6,612,227.48 € corresponds to European funding.

The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), now called CBE-JU (Circular Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking) is an initiative of the Horizon 2020 (now Horizon Europe) Framework Programme, which includes a Public-Private Partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Bio-Based Industries Consortium (BIC).
