The Task Force Grow4Lemon recently celebrated its results presentation day, in which all the members of the consortium took part. The objective of this project, led by Andalusian entities, is to improve the management of lemon crops in Andalusia through the development and validation of products with fertiliser and biostimulant potential in real field conditions.

A project to face the current challenges of the sector

Grow4Lemon is a response to the widespread fall in citrus production, The main causes of the crisis are drought and climate change. This problem has a direct impact on rural employment in areas such as Malaga and Almeria, where a large part of the lemon crop is concentrated, and about half of it is produced under ecological standards.
The project proposes solutions based on nature itself: biological soil and plant management, by developing sustainable agricultural inputs that strengthen crop resilience.

Stages and phases of the project

The Grow4Lemon Task Force has developed in four main stages:
1. Documentary phase:
In this initial stage, key information is collected on beneficial micro-organisms, specific lemon crop issues and plant growth stimulation pathways at the molecular level. These studies lay the foundation for further product development.
Experimental phase:
It includes the design of biostimulants, the development and optimisation of formulations, and the validation of products under real field conditions.
3. Final report writing phase:
During the last months of the project, a technical report is drawn up, which includes all the results obtained and the activities carried out in a structured manner.
4. Dissemination and communication phase:
As a transversal activity, a communication plan has been implemented to make visible both the progress and the results of the project, as well as the strategies used to promote more sustainable agriculture.

The day was opened by José Manuel García Madero (DOMCA's R&D manager) as the entity representing the task force. For its part, Alberto Baños (Head of Microbiology) and José David García (head of Biotechnology), presented the work carried out by DOMCA.
They highlighted the design of microbial consortia with biostimulant potential, i.e. communities of micro-organisms that interact to improve soil health and to protect plants against pathogens, salinity and drought. On the basis of soil samples provided by Lora Agricultural, two products were developed, in individual formulations and with microalgae, adapted for foliar application or irrigation. Both products comply with the requirements of the andalusian ecological legislation and have demonstrated the ability to improving productivity, soil health and crop resilience.
For its part, Irene Ruiz, of SACh (Servicios Ambientales Las Chozas), explained the development of two organic amendments aimed at increasing soil organic matter, improving its physico-chemical structure and stimulating its biological activity.

Juan Carlos Hervás, of Lora Agricultural, The company, where the field trials have been carried out, detailed the needs of the crop and the tests carried out with the products, both on young and mature trees, in the following varieties fine and vernal, and by means of different application methods. Lora Agrícola has already incorporated some of the products developed in their fertilisation strategy, noting a improved profitability with a contained cost.

Rebeca Ramos, of the Tecnova Technology Centre, He presented the results of the evaluation of the efficacy of the developed products, both in laboratory and field conditions. He confirmed that the combination of solid amendment and microbial consortium type 2, especially when applied as a foliar application, has been the most effective for reduce oxidative stress, improving soil health and restoring the physiological balance of plants.
According to Ramos, these strategies are particularly useful in aged citrus crops, The soil has lost some of its natural fertility.
