The OLIVE TREE HEALTH TASK FORCE, led by the company DOMCA and coordinated by the AINIA technology centre, aims to increase efficiency, yields and therefore improve the economic results of the olive and olive oil sector by attacking the olive tree diseases and pests that threaten the sector's productivity because the existing measures for controlling these diseases are insufficient or there is no effective control solution.

Within the framework of the innovation project, both emerging diseases (e.g. Xylella fastidiosa) and endemic (Verticillosis) from all possible points of view: considering both the possibility of prevention and the treatment of already contaminated trees, all in a sustainable way, using biological solutions (micro-organisms and/or extracts) that also reduce the use of traditional chemical phytosanitary products.

Novel detection strategies are used, such as hyperspectral and thermal remote sensing for automatic symptom detection or the use of biocontrol systems, which are more sustainable and natural and sometimes more effective than traditional chemical pesticides.

This modernisation of the cultural practices of such an important crop in the national territory will have an impact on the entire olive value chain: from the farmer, through the olive processing or table olive industry to the end consumer, who will be able to access products produced in a sustainable way, free of chemical pesticides.

Therefore, the objective of the innovation project is to design an innovative integrated control for each of the diseases selected in this first phase, resulting in an increase in productivity in the olive groves and an improvement in the quality of the olive oils obtained from the crops treated with the tailor-made strategy designed.

In this way, by restructuring and modernising control strategies, the aim is for the olive sector to respond to the new needs of consumers, who are increasingly demanding more organic, natural products, free of chemical pesticides.

The project is co-financed by the European Union at 80% under EAFRD and 20% under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the managing authority responsible for the implementation of the EAFRD assistance and its national share being the Directorate-General for Rural Development, Innovation and Agri-Food Training (DGDRIFA). Total amount of aid approved: 384,830.06 €.
