The problems of lemon cultivation in Andalusia

Climate change is currently affecting all production processes in the agricultural and industrial sector globally. In particular, citrus fruit production has been greatly affected by the increase in global temperatures (one of the most pronounced effects of climate change) during the flowering and fruit set phases, causing losses in fruit yields.

In general, under these stress conditions, there is high oxidative damage, reduced stomatal conductance and reduced photosynthetic capacity of the trees, with a consequent impact on the nutritional status and growth of the plants.

In this context, it is necessary to study different strategies for action and management of lemon cultivation from a different point of view: biochemistry and microbiology.

Investigation of the interaction between physiological and biochemical processes of plant condition will contribute to develop actions to improve the nutritional needs required during adverse environmental conditions and, consequently, to optimise and/or reduce the incorporation of agricultural inputs to the lemon crop.

The GROW4LEMON Task Force brings together a group of entities with different strategies but aimed at advancing towards a better management of citrus crops in general and lemon cultivation in particular.

GROW4LEMON brings the entities together; DOMCA, TECNOVA, Lora Lora Agrícola S.L., SACh and ANDANATURA, whose lines of research will be focused on the development of new products with a common objective, to increase the productivity of lemon crops affected by different environmental conditions.

The proposed research will The duration of the course will be two years and it will take place in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.. For the development of GROW4LEMON, The Task Force proposes several locations depending on the objectives and activities to be developed.

In this sense, the development of different bioproducts with beneficial potential for lemon cultivation will be carried out.

Specifically, on the experimental farms of Lora Lora Agrícola S.L., In Malaga, sampling and monitoring of the products obtained will take place and, at the same time, different management and improvement actions will be studied by means of green manuring of the by-products generated during the crop cycle (pruning remains, etc.).

On the other hand, Las Chozas Environmental Services SL (SACh) will obtain in its composting plants in Almeria a fertiliser product rich in nutrients and potentially improved thanks to the incorporation of micro-organisms of interest that will have a positive effect on the compost obtained, reducing processing times and improving its final properties.

DOMCA will study the protection of lemon crops against rhizospheric pathogens at its facilities in Granada by producing microbial consortia that exert a biostimulant effect on the crop.

Finally, each of these actions will be combined with the analytical expertise of TECNOVA at its facilities in Almeria, which will be responsible for identifying and selecting biomarkers of interest that will allow the reformulation of the prototypes developed, as well as the study of their efficacy.

All these strategic lines of research will be disseminated to the scientific community and society by means of a communication plan by ANDANATURA.

In short, the GROW4LEMON Task Force will be a first step towards promoting new, highly efficient and environmentally friendly products, while expanding the range of resources and raw materials available for the lemon cultivation.

The The general objective of GROW4LEMON focuses on developing different prototypes with biostimulant capacity to improve the management of lemon crops, mainly by improving their growth and development and preventing damage caused by biotic and abiotic stress. In order to achieve this objective, work will be carried out on the generation of different agricultural inputs obtained from composting processes, as well as the application of microbial consortia beneficial to the soil and the plant.

In addition, to this end proposes to work from a molecular point of view thanks to the identification of biomarkers and/or metabolites of interest that act as signalling molecules in different situations. The identification of these markers will be carried out through the use of data analysis and chemometrics, as well as other sensors of agronomic variables such as pH and temperature, making it possible to elaborate a pattern of the plant's defence and stimulation system and, therefore, improving the processes of obtaining prototypes for greater efficiency.

In this sense, the project is part of one of the European Union's current strategic lines on bioeconomy and is also linked to the generation of sustainable processes and products.

The project has a total budget of 280,076.02 € and is financed with European Agricultural Funds for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Junta de Andalucía in the call for the Operation of Autonomous Operational Groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability 2022.
