Innosol4med is a European PRIMA project whose main objective is to improve the characteristics of pre-prepared convenience food products of the Mediterranean diet through sustainable and innovative solutions.

The Mediterranean diet is widely recognised for its health-promoting characteristics, as well as being a dietary model that can be easily extrapolated to other regions and cultures.

The InnoSol4Med project is built on the premise that unhealthy eating habits can be improved by formulating easy-to-prepare, ready-to-eat foods (also called convenience foods) that fit today's lifestyles.

The development and commercialisation of new healthy foods will be made possible through the formulation of new food concepts that include improved ingredients and the development of disruptive technological solutions.

In this sense, InnoSol4Med aims to introduce innovative matrices from sustainable sources and indigenous microbial strains as new functional ingredients, as well as solutions to improve the quality, safety, nutritional value and functionality of traditional foods.

Synergies will also be sought with innovative non-thermal technological solutions and fermentations using indigenous Mediterranean starter cultures for the development of new ready-to-eat products.

Finally, the environmental impact of InnoSol4Med is related to the valorisation of local agro-food by-products for the production of new high-value functional compounds and their implementation in more profitable industrial processes that contribute to the reduction of waste, promoting the sustainability of the sector and the circular economy.

A PRIMA consortium of partners from Mediterranean countries

PRIMA is a call for Mediterranean countries in which companies, universities and research centres from all Mediterranean countries or associated countries can participate. InnoSol4Med brings together 11 partners from 5 Mediterranean countries, including Croatia (3), Italy (3), Spain (2), Turkey and Morocco (2). The consortium is multidisciplinary and is led by the Department of Marine Studies, University of Split (Croatia) and includes 6 Universities (Split, Bologna, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Çukurova, Chouaib Doukkali and Sidi Mohamed Abdellah), 1 research centre (CSIC), 3 SMEs (DOMCA, Centaurus and Greener) and 1 large company (Martino Rossi).

Project objectives

The main objective of the InnoSol4Med project is the development of innovative solutions for inclusion in products from the Mediterranean diet and convenience products.

To this end, functional ingredients will be introduced through innovative matrices obtained from essential oils, extracts and active ingredients of natural origin obtained from by-products of the agri-food industry and indigenous microbial strains. The formulation of these new products seeks synergies with innovative non-thermal technological solutions.

The aim is to improve the safety, nutritional value and functionality of new food products. On the other hand, the project aims to study consumer habits and preferences in order to offer healthy and sustainable alternatives through awareness-raising campaigns. The aim is to support the adoption and exploitation of the innovative solutions developed in the project.

The PRIMA Call

The European initiative PRIMA (Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area) aims to implement R&D&I actions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of agri-food systems and the quality, availability and management of water in the Mediterranean area.

It is a 10-year initiative (2018-2028), partially funded by the Horizon 2020 programme.

Currently, 19 countries are participating: Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.

Aware of the importance of disseminating R&D&I projects, so that the results reach the scientific community and society, DOMCA has carried out various dissemination actions, such as:

A CDTI-funded project

The project is being promoted in Spain through the Industrial Technical Development Centre with European funding through the NEXT GENERATION funds.

The project has a timeframe from 2023 to 2026 and DOMCA has a budget of €200,000, of which a total of €170,000 is in the form of a partially repayable loan.
