DMC Research has designed innovative solutions against olive pests using onion extracts. Onion solutions capable of eliminating diseases caused by micro-organisms while protecting beneficial insects, such as pollinators, essential for the balance of ecosystems.
During four years of work, the team led by Dolores Garrido, Professor of Plant Physiology at the University of Valencia, has been working on a new project to develop the University of Granada, and Alberto Baños, PhD in Microbiology from the DMC Research Center at Alhendín, in the province of Grenada, has developed these strategies within the European project BIOVEXO. This project, which brings together experts from Spain, Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Belgium, has received international recognition in scientific publications and is also part of the industrial doctorate of researcher Ana Falcón-Piñeiro.
This crop, which is the basis of the olive oil, is an economic engine that positions Spain as the world leader in production. However, climate change and diseases such as ‘verticillosis’ and the devastating ‘Xylella fastidiosa’, known as the «Ebola of the olive grove», seriously threaten its viability.
«One of the results that has surprised us the most is how onion extracts are able to reduce the symptoms of verticillium, a disease caused by a fungus that is widespread in the Mediterranean region,» says Falcón-Piñeiro.
In addition, these solutions not only combat diseases caused by micro-organisms, but also strengthen the plant's immune system, increasing its resilience to increasingly frequent challenges such as the drought and the heat waves derived from the climate change.

According to the researchers, the pest control in agriculture is a challenge because of the need to minimise environmental impact while protecting beneficial insects. Therefore, special care has been taken to ensure that the products developed are safe for bees.
«In recent years, the bee population has declined due to the excessive use of chemicals. That is why natural solutions such as those developed in this research are key to ensuring their biodiversity and agricultural production,» emphasises Dr Falcón-Piñeiro.
The project has also involved the participation of the olive oil and table olives producing cooperative DCOOP, and the progress made has been transferred to agricultural practice.
This has enabled a decisive step, as the scientists emphasise: testing the solutions in real field conditions and evaluating their effectiveness directly in olive groves. «This approach ensures that scientific findings do not remain in the laboratory, but are quickly translated into useful tools for farmers,» adds Dr. Baños.
