This month saw the official launch of the Taskforce Grow4Lemon: sustainable solutions for better nutritional management of the lemon crop, with the presence of all its members. The aim of the group, made up of Andalusian entities, is to improve the management of citrus crops in Andalusia, specifically lemons, through the development of prototypes of new products with fertiliser potential and their testing in real field conditions.

During the launch day, held at the Las Yeguas estate in Zalea, Malaga, where the trials are being carried out, José Manuel García Madero, project manager for DOMCA, the entity that leads the group, explained that the project arose from the need to address the general decline in citrus production, due, among other causes, to the drought and the effects of the climate change. The project aims to address this situation by developing solutions to improve biological management, i.e. acting from nature itself.

Ana Falcón, from DOMCA's R&D department, explained that the company has developed two biostimulant products based on biological control microorganisms isolated from the soils of Lora Agrícola's own Las Yeguas farm and microalgae. These microbial consortia are intended to increase agricultural yields in two varieties of lemon: fino and verna. The products, which have the capacity to inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, have been applied by foliar spraying and irrigation.

For his part, Juan Bartolomé Escobar, from SACh (Servicios Ambientales Las Chozas), a pioneer in the circular bioeconomy in Andalusia, explained that SACh is developing two organic amendments based on a solid and a liquid fraction with the aim of providing organic matter to the soil and improving its physicochemical properties and enhancing the biological activity of the soil. The effects of the formulated products on soil microbial health and their biostimulant effect are currently being studied.

Rebeca Ramos, of the Tecnova Technology Centre, He explained that the organisation is driving the implementation of the project and participating technically through the analysis of biomarkers of interest in the field trial and the performance of in vitro tests to evaluate the efficacy of the products and their impact on the crop and the soil.

For his part, Juan Carlos Hervás, from Lora Agricultural, He stressed the importance of making these products, which are essential in improving agricultural yields, also profitable for farmers.

Finally, Julio Campos, manager of the Andanatura Foundation for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development, the entity responsible for the dissemination of the project, stressed the need to detect solutions to environmental problems based on dynamic conservation, a profitable and sustainable conservation for rural SMEs.

The launch day of Grow4Lemon concluded with a visit to the farm where the solutions obtained are being tested.

Grow4Lemon is a project co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, EAFRD, through grants for the creation and operation of operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) in agricultural productivity and sustainability for the implementation of pilot projects and the development of new products, practices, processes and technologies in the agricultural, food and forestry sectors, within the framework of the Rural Development Programme of Andalusia 2014-2020.
