GO Simbioliva: symbiotics in the circular economy of the alperujo

The olive oil sector, led by Spain (62% in the EU and 45% worldwide, with Andalusia producing 80% of the national oil), generates between 13 and 18 million tonnes of olive pomace per year. However, it faces risks such as the collapse in high production seasons, the reduction in production in the last 5 years, and the consequences of climate change, which affect the structure of the sector and the management of by-products.

Climate fluctuations and adverse weather events, together with the loss of fertile soil (14.16 t/ha in 2017, according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition), aggravate desertification and reduce productivity. This highlights the need to adopt soil restoration, conservation and improvement measures, aligned with EU strategies such as the «Mission Soil Manifesto» and the Soil Protection Strategy 2030, which seek to mitigate environmental impacts and ensure the sustainability of the olive sector.

Objectives of the Simbioliva Task Force

The aim of SIMBIOLIVA is to develop biotechnology solutions that drive a circular economy in the olive sector, using the olive pomace to protect the soil against degradation and increase the crop resilience.

The project proposes an innovative strategy that combines physico-chemical processes to reduce the presence of polyphenols with biological treatments that optimise processing times. This will allow the implementation of a system based on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), with a direct and positive impact on the olive sector and agriculture in general.

Simbioliva faces the challenge of crop resilience to climate change with a balanced consortium of 3 companies: DCOOP, El Ejidillo and DMC Research, the University CEU San Pablo and Agri-food Cooperatives who acts as a representative of the group.

On the other hand, the Biotechnology platform Biovegen is in charge of disseminating and publicising the group's performances.
