What is heat stress and water stress and how do they affect plants?

Plants, as living things, are highly dependent on their environment to grow and develop properly.

Factors such as temperature and water availability are crucial to their health and productivity. However, when these conditions deviate from the optimum, plants can experience heat and water stress, affecting their physiology and ability to survive.

In this article, we will explore in detail what are heat and water stress?, how they affect plants and what measures can be taken to mitigate these effects.

How heat and water stress affect plants

In the following lines, we will discuss how heat stress and water stress impact on plants.

We will analyse the effects of high and low temperatures and the consequences of lack and excess of water on plants.

This understanding is essential to implement effective farm management strategies and ensure crop health.

What is heat stress in plants?

Temperature stress in plants refers to the environmental conditions under which plants are extremely high or low, outside the optimal range for their growth.

However, they have a temperature range in which they perform best, and any significant deviation can cause stress.

High temperature

High temperatures can have devastating effects on plants. When temperatures exceed the optimum range, plants may suffer from various problems:

Low temperature

Low temperatures also present significant challenges for plants:

What is water stress in plants?

Water stress in plants refers to the situation in which do not have the right amount of water. This can occur both due to water deficit (drought) and excess water (waterlogging).

Did you know that? Domca, together with other entities, forms part of the GROW4LEMON Task Force, The aim of the project is to increase the productivity of the lemon crops affected by this and other environmental conditions.

Lack of water

Lack of water is one of the most common forms water stress and can have several negative consequences for plants:

Excess water

Excess water can also be detrimental to plants, although in a different way than drought:

Temperature stress in plants refers to the environmental conditions under which plants are extremely high or low, outside the optimal range for their growth.

However, they have a temperature range in which they perform best, and any significant deviation can cause stress.

High temperature

High temperatures can have devastating effects on plants. When temperatures exceed the optimum range, plants may suffer from various problems:

  • Reduced photosynthesis: high temperatures can damage photosynthetic mechanisms. Enzymes responsible for photosynthesis can be denatured, reducing the plant's ability to convert sunlight into energy.
  • Increased perspiration: As the temperature increases, so does the transpiration rate. This can lead to rapid water loss, dehydrating the plant and causing wilting.
  • Cell damage: elevated temperatures can cause denaturation of proteins and lipids in cell membranes, resulting in cell damage. This can affect the integrity of cell membranes and the functionality of cells.
  • Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS): Heat stress can increase the production of ROS, which are highly reactive molecules that can cause oxidative damage to cells, affecting proteins, lipids and DNA.

Low temperature

Low temperatures also present significant challenges for plants:

  • Tissue freezing: Plants contain water in their cells, and when the temperature drops low enough, this water can freeze. Ice crystals can damage cell walls, causing cell rupture and tissue death.
  • Slowing of metabolism: low temperatures reduce the speed of biochemical reactions within plants. This can slow down growth and development, as essential metabolic processes are affected.
  • Defrost damage: When plants are thawed after being frozen, they may experience additional damage. The thawing process can cause rupture of cell membranes if it occurs too quickly, aggravating the initial damage.

Lack of water

Lack of water is one of the most common forms water stress and can have several negative consequences for plants:

  • Reduction of photosynthesis: the opening of stomata, which are pores in the leaves, is reduced in drought conditions to minimise water loss. However, this also limits the entry of carbon dioxide, essential for photosynthesis.
  • Wilting and loss of turgidity: turgor, which is the water pressure inside the cells, is crucial for maintaining the rigidity of plants. Lack of water reduces this pressure, causing plants to wilt.
  • Reduced growth: drought affects cell division and cell elongation, resulting in reduced overall growth. Plants invest fewer resources in growth when faced with water scarcity.
  • Accumulation of osmotic solutes: In response to drought, plants can accumulate solutes such as sugars and amino acids to adjust their osmotic potential and retain water. While this can help maintain turgor, it can also divert resources from other important processes.

Excess water

Excess water can also be detrimental to plants, although in a different way than drought:

  • Root hypoxia: waterlogging can limit the amount of oxygen available to the roots. Roots need oxygen for cellular respiration, and lack of oxygen can lead to hypoxia, affecting their functionality.
  • Root rot: saturated conditions favour the development of pathogens that cause root rot. This can lead to root decay and loss of the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.
  • Disruption of nutrient absorption: roots in waterlogged soils have difficulties in absorbing essential nutrients. This can result in nutritional deficiencies that affect plant growth and development.
