The plague is caused by the bacteria Xylella fastidious which is responsible for causing a large number of diseases in various types of crops of great economic interest. Among the diseases it causes, one of the best known is sudden olive decline.
La transmission of Xylella is caused by insect vectors (Philaenus spumarius, Philaenus italosignus and Neiphilaenus campestris), which feed on xylem sap and cause contamination of infected plant material.

Currently, therapeutic treatments are not sufficiently effective to allow affected plants to recover under field conditions.
A great deal of research is being carried out in this area in order to control the movement of insect vectors and to combat the bacterium.
This work recalls the need to strengthen ongoing research on the application of new phytosanitary measures, including vector control and the application of sustainable products that act against Xylella.

The Xylella Forum this year, organised by the BIOVEXO project, will discuss these issues from a broad perspective, including both farmers and almond producers, as well as the scientific and business community involved in researching and developing solutions against the pest, not forgetting the local communities affected.
The forum will feature contributions from leading experts in the field, knowledgeable about the situation in Spain and Europe, as well as from several researchers actively working on the pest, including experts from two projects funded by the European Commission: BIOVEXO and Life Resilience.
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion in which the actual situation and possible future solutions will be openly discussed. The panel is composed of representatives of the almond industry, local development experts and affected farmers.
At the end of the day, attendees will be offered a glass of local wine and a networking dinner, buffet style, in the same facilities of the event, the Hotel Maya in Alicante.

At DOMCA we have developed a range of against various factors that may negatively affect crop development. residue-free for the care, nutrition and defence of olive and almond tree crops affected by Xylella. These products are made of natural, residue-free compounds that are harmless to humans and environmentally friendly.
